Desktop and monitor
5K is the native resolution of the 27-inch iMac and Apple Studio Display. 8K needs about 33 megapixels, which desktop browsers can draw but iPhone and iPad Safari cannot.

Setting a black wallpaper without downloading anything
Most operating systems can show a solid colour directly, which is the lightest option of all:
- Windows 10 and 11: Settings → Personalization → Background → set "Personalize your background" to Solid color and choose black (or a custom colour).
- macOS: System Settings → Wallpaper → the Colors section, or add a custom colour and set it to black.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Color, then pull the colour down to black. You can also pick a downloaded PNG from Photos.
- Android: long-press the home screen → Wallpaper & style. Options vary by manufacturer; choosing a downloaded black PNG from your gallery works everywhere.
Black wallpapers on OLED screens
On OLED phones, laptops and monitors, pixels showing #000000 are switched off. A pure black wallpaper therefore draws less power than a bright one and makes app icons appear to float. The saving depends on how much of the screen is visible wallpaper and on brightness; it is largest on a phone at high brightness. On LCD screens the backlight stays on regardless, so black looks dark grey in a dim room and saves essentially nothing.
If you want texture rather than a flat colour, the generator exports stars, noise, carbon fibre and other patterns at 4K; the wallpaper design guide covers aspect ratios, lock-screen safe areas and pattern density, and pure vs near-black explains when #000 is worth it.
